When surgery enters the discussion
Jaw surgery may be considered when the position or proportions of the jaws create a significant bite or facial relationship that orthodontic tooth movement alone cannot predictably correct.
Braces and Jaw Surgery
Some jaw relationships cannot be fully corrected by moving teeth alone. In selected adult patients, orthodontic treatment may be coordinated with orthognathic jaw surgery.
The orthodontic role
Braces or aligners are commonly used before surgery to position the teeth appropriately relative to each jaw. Orthodontic treatment then continues after surgery to refine the bite.
A coordinated treatment plan
Care is planned jointly by the orthodontist and oral and maxillofacial surgeon, with other dental providers involved when needed. Treatment sequencing and expectations should be clear before treatment begins.
Not every severe-looking bite needs surgery
Some bite problems are primarily dental rather than skeletal. Diagnosis determines whether treatment can be managed orthodontically, surgically or through more than one reasonable approach.
