Orthodontic Insurance in BC

Dental plans in British Columbia vary widely in how they handle orthodontic treatment. Coverage should be confirmed directly with the insurer or benefits administrator.

Orthodontic benefits are often separate

A plan can cover routine dental care while providing limited or no orthodontic benefits. Some plans use a lifetime orthodontic maximum rather than an annual maximum.

Questions to ask your plan

Confirm the eligible percentage, lifetime maximum, age restrictions, waiting periods, reimbursement schedule and whether pre-authorization is required.

The treatment fee and insurance are different questions

The orthodontic treatment plan should be based on diagnosis. Insurance can help with affordability, but it should not determine which treatment is clinically appropriate.

Get the financial plan in writing

Ask the orthodontic office for a clear estimate showing the proposed fee and what it includes. Then compare that information with the benefits available under your plan.
