Braces for Children

Not every child who sees an orthodontist needs braces immediately. Early assessment is primarily about growth, eruption and bite development and deciding whether to observe or intervene.

Why timing matters

Children's teeth and jaws are developing. An assessment can review permanent-tooth eruption, available space, the bite and growth. Many children are monitored until timing is more favourable.

Earlier treatment

Certain crossbites, eruption problems, severe crowding or growth-related bite concerns may justify earlier treatment. Early treatment should have a defined clinical objective.

Comprehensive treatment

For many children, comprehensive braces are considered once enough permanent teeth are present to address alignment and bite goals efficiently. Development matters more than a specific birthday.

Parents' role

Parents can support brushing, appointments, appliance care and elastic wear when prescribed. Good habits before braces can make active treatment easier.
